Longmont High School (Longmont, CO)

  • Instructor:  Robert Stahly
  • Location: Longmont, CO
  • School Profile: Public High School, Grades 9-12, 1300 students
  • Class Title(s): Music Technology I, Music Technology II
  • Grades Levels Included: 9-12
  • Percentage of Students Reached: With 1300 students and approximately 40-50 students taking the class each year, around 3%
  • Structure of NTM Class(es): We have a 24 station mac computer lab.  Music Technology I is open to all students, and we typically offer one class each semester with around 20 students.  Music Technology II only has the prerequisite of Music Tech I, and is typically offered one semester every other year.
  • Software Used: Garage Band, iMovie, Logic
  • Hardware Used: Mac Mini, microphones, cables, interfaces, MIDI keyboard
  • Class NTM Activities:  We start out in Garageband to get an idea of the software, and eventually move to Logic for the professional features.  Early in the semester, we have units around MIDI instruments, melody, harmony, form, mics, and such so students get a sample of many of the different building blocks.  Projects include writing music, mixing, remixing, sampling, creating a commercial, and a film soundtrack.
  • History: I started this class in 2011 because I felt Music Tech because I felt that so many students would be potentially interested.  I wanted to address our non-performing population of students. Music Tech relates and reinforces so much to the other music classes and has so much career relevant material.
  • Success Stories from NTM Activities: The biggest success story to me is that I work with so many students that would otherwise never take a music class at high school.  I have several students who continue to make their own music and/or pursue a Music degree (traditional, business, or audio engineering).
  • Advice to Others Starting NTM Project: You can do this.  It does not have to look like anyone else's class.  Start with your skill set and materials.  Consider your student population, what will interest them, and what do you want from the students?  What do you want their experience to be? Reach out and network; you will find plenty of resources and helpers.
  • Additional Comments: We currently have a pretty wide array of music classes: Choir (3 levels), Orchestra (3 levels), Concert Band (2 levels), Jazz Band (2), Marching Band, Steel Band, Guitar (2 levels), Piano, AP Music Theory, and Theater Technology.  Next year we will also offer Mariachi. While the majority of these classes are performance centric, it also means that we have around 35% of the school population in a music class each year.
