  • Structure of NTM Class(es): The club consists of any 6-8 grade students who are interested in music technology.  The group meets one hour per week.  The goal of the group is to expose students to 21st century music technology, and establish a foundation for further music technology integration into the overall music department curriculum.
  • Software Used: Web-based tools:,,,,; as well as Pure Data and GarageBand
  • Hardware Used: Dell PCs
  • Class NTM Activities:  Students work independently on their own dubsteps, remixes, film scores, and sound designs.  In the future, students will be collaborating on sounds and compositions for a play that our theater club is writing.
  • History: In the Spring of 2012, we started a music technology club at RCMS. For the first semester, we met in a computer lab with 36 computers all of which were Dells equipped with Windows XP and IE 8.  We used web-based software for music projects (aviary, audiotool, audio sauna, noteflight) and explored some uses of MIDI as well as audio programing in Pure Data.  The students were also exposed to, an SMS application development service that has the ability to play audio files in phone-based applications.
  • Success Stories with NTMs:  Students composed and remixed a number of songs in the first semester.  In one semester, the club attracted 60 unique members, 30 of which were regular attendees.
  • Advice to Others Starting NTM Project: Start wherever you are comfortable and stay out of the students' way as much as possible.  Then, take note of what they are most interested in, and make that your next point of departure. Give them deadlines for projects, and make them realistic.
  • Additional Comments: We are just at the beginning of our journey, but much is on the horizon.
